Your computer takes a long time to start up and someone recommends "adding more memory." But before buying components, it's worth clarifying what is slowing the machine down. Adding RAM and replacing the disk with an SSD are different upgrades: choosing well starts with observing when the slowness appears.
RAM and storage do different jobs
RAM holds the data used by programs while they are open. Storage keeps Windows, applications, and files when the computer is turned off. Having free disk space does not mean having enough RAM, and adding RAM does not increase the space available to store photos.
When adding RAM can help
It's worth checking if the computer responds well when opening an application, but becomes slow when you accumulate programs or tabs. Watch memory usage while you carry out your usual tasks: in Windows you can check it in Task Manager.
High usage is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. You also need to check which application is causing it and whether the computer allows memory to be added. Some devices have it soldered and do not accept additional modules.
When the disk is worth checking
If you still use a mechanical hard drive and the computer takes a long time to start up or open applications, switching to a compatible SSD can improve those times. If you already have an SSD, replacing it with another one does not guarantee that the slowness will disappear: first you need to check its status, the free space, and the active processes.
Don't choose a drive based only on its capacity. The physical format and the connection must be compatible with the computer. You can check the Crucial compatibility tool and compare it with your computer manufacturer's documentation.
Three situations to guide the check
- It slows down when working with many applications: check RAM and the usage of each program.
- It takes a long time to start up and open files: check storage and startup programs.
- It starts well and gets worse after a while: also check temperature, ventilation, and background processes.
These signs can overlap. They do not allow a specific improvement to be promised, nor do they rule out a fault. If there are freezes or errors when reading files, protect the data before making changes.
Before buying: compatibility, data, and total cost
The proposal must take into account the exact model, how you use it, and the general condition of the computer. When changing the storage, agree on how the files and the system will be transferred, and keep an independent backup. Compare the cost of the component and the work with the usefulness you expect to get from the computer.
