Computer Won’t Turn On: Common Causes and When It’s a Serious Problem

It usually happens without warning: you press the power button… and nothing. No screen, no boot, nothing at all.

If your computer won’t turn on, it often looks worse than it actually is. But at the same time, it’s rarely something you can fix by randomly trying things.


The typical situation: “it won’t turn on and I don’t know why”

This is one of the most frustrating issues because there’s no clear error message. The computer doesn’t respond, or only partially reacts, and you don’t know where to start.

In many cases, it’s not a catastrophic failure, but a problem related to power, hardware, or internal configuration. The issue is that from the outside, everything looks the same.

This is where most people waste time trying random things without really understanding what’s going on.

Note: this post does not cover complex electronic repairs (damaged motherboard, burned components, etc.). We focus on common diagnostic situations.

Most common causes

  1. Power supply issue
    It could be the cable, the power supply unit, or even the outlet.
    Result: the computer shows no response at all.
  2. Internal hardware failure
    RAM, storage, or motherboard issues can prevent startup.
    Symptom: the computer turns on but doesn’t boot properly.
  3. Problem after an update or change
    Sometimes after installing something or updating, the system stops booting.
  4. Incorrect internal configuration
    Boot settings or BIOS issues can block startup.

In many cases, it’s not just one issue, but a combination. That’s what makes it difficult to identify the real cause.

What usually happens in real life

People try the basics: turning it off and on, unplugging it, trying again…

Sometimes it reacts, but the problem keeps coming back or never really disappears.

That usually means there’s a deeper issue that won’t be solved with basic checks.

Quick checks (just to get an idea)

  • Does it make any sound or signal when you try to turn it on? → It might be receiving power.
  • Do lights or fans turn on? → It could be a partial failure, not a complete one.
  • Did it happen after a recent change? → That can give clues.

These checks help to understand the situation, but they’re usually not enough to fix the problem.

Signs it’s not a simple issue

  • No response at all
  • Turns on but doesn’t boot
  • The issue appears intermittently

Update: when a computer stops powering on after an outage, storm or electrical surge

If the failure appeared after a power cut, storm or electrical incident, disconnect the computer and avoid repeated attempts. A surge protector can reduce some risks, but it cannot guarantee that the power supply and motherboard will always remain unaffected.

A failed PSU and a motherboard short circuit may look identical from outside: nothing happens when the button is pressed, or the computer tries to start and immediately stops. The timing is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Power supply or motherboard: why visual inspection is not enough

A PSU may provide some voltage and still fail under load. It may also refuse to start because its protection detects a short on the motherboard or a connected component. A spinning fan or an unloaded bridge test is therefore not conclusive.

Diagnosis isolates circuits and components methodically: main power, CPU power, memory, graphics, peripherals and case connections. If a PSU starts when a particular line is disconnected, this may indicate that protection was being triggered, but the cause may still be the board, CPU, wiring or PSU itself.

Do not open a power supply. It can retain dangerous voltage even after it has been unplugged.

Three different situations often described as “it will not turn on”

  1. No reaction at all: check the outlet, cable, switch, PSU and possible shorts.
  2. Lights or fans but no picture: RAM, graphics, motherboard, CPU, display or connections may be involved.
  3. A picture appears but Windows does not start: this is no longer a pure power fault; storage, the operating system and boot configuration need checking.

Safe checks before extensive disassembly

  • Try another outlet and check the power cable.
  • Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and peripherals.
  • Note lights, beeps, fans or brief attempts to start.
  • Record what happened immediately before the fault: moving, cleaning, a new part, an outage or an update.
  • If there is a burnt smell, sparks, liquid or repeated power cycling, unplug it and stop.

If repair is uneconomical: what may still be reusable

A failed motherboard does not mean the entire computer is lost. Depending on compatibility and condition, hard drives, SSDs, RAM, graphics cards, optical drives, fans and the case may be reused. Every component should be checked before installation elsewhere.

Storage requires particular care because it contains the data. Check its health and make a backup before moving it. If BitLocker or another encryption system is enabled, the recovery key may be required on a different computer.

A PSU should only be reused after verification and after confirming that it is suitable for the new system. Moving a suspect PSU into a new computer can put new components at risk.

The decision is not always simply “repair or discard”

Diagnosis also supports an informed decision. Sometimes replacing a PSU or correcting a connection is worthwhile; in other cases the age and motherboard cost make a new computer plus data or component transfer the sensible option.
