Data recovery on external hard drives (HDD USB): what to do if it makes noise, is slow, or does not appear

04 Feb 2026

When people talk about “data recovery”, many times they do not refer to the whole computer: they refer to the typical real-life situation… a USB external hard drive with photos, work, or important files that suddenly stops working.

In this post we focus on a very specific case: mechanical external hard drives (HDD) via USB. It is the most common scenario when a client says: “I have the drive, but I cannot open anything”.

Typical signs of an external HDD that is failing

These are the most common situations when the problem can get worse:

  • Makes clicking sounds repeatedly or “click-clack” (bad sign).
  • Sounds strange, vibrates differently, or seems to try to start and then stops.
  • Appears and disappears (connects and disconnects by itself).
  • Takes a very long time to open folders or copy, and the computer gets stuck “thinking”.
  • It asks you to format to be able to use it.
  • It shows up as a “drive” but does not allow access or gives errors when opening.

The sooner you stop using it, the better the chances.

What NOT to do (if you really care about your data)

In data recovery, insisting is usually mistake #1. If the drive is unstable, every attempt can worsen its condition.

Especially avoid:

  • Do not use it “from time to time” hoping it works.
  • Do not try to format to “fix it”.
  • Do not run automatic repairs over and over if the drive gets stuck.
  • Do not try to copy “everything at once” if it is very slow or disconnects.
  • Do not open it or manipulate it internally.

If the drive makes clicking sounds, disconnects, or gets blocked, the smartest thing is usually to stop.

When it is usually something “simple” and when it is serious

Without getting technical, there are two main scenarios:

  1. Logical problem (sometimes recoverable with good margin)
The drive is detected, but there is structure corruption, occasional read errors, or inaccessible folders. In some cases, quite a bit of information can be extracted if handled carefully.
  2. Mechanical / physical problem (high risk)
Clicks, strange noises, constant disconnections, freezes when accessing… here the drive may be damaging itself. In these cases, insisting is what harms the most.

What type of recoveries we do (and which we do not)

To be clear and save time:

  • Yes, we work on cases of external HDD (mechanical) drives via USB, prioritizing recovery of photos/documents/important files when the case allows it.
  • No, we do not do laboratory repairs (soldering, head replacement, internal openings, etc.).
  • For SSD drives and USB/pen drives, recovery often requires specific techniques and equipment and is usually not a service worth trying “blindly”. If someone asks, the case is evaluated, but it is not the main focus.

The idea is: if you have a mechanical external HDD, that is where recovery makes the most sense.

How an external HDD case is usually approached (without promises)

Each case is different, but normally it is done like this:

  • Confirm real symptoms (noises, disconnections, slowness, detection).
  • Diagnosis to see if it is a logical or mechanical problem.
  • Attempt to extract prioritizing what is important (not everything randomly).
  • Verification of what was recovered (so it is usable).

Barcelona: if your external HDD makes noise or is failing, stop and consult

If your mechanical USB external hard drive clicks, disconnects, or takes too long, the most cost-effective thing is usually not to keep trying and have it checked with criteria to avoid worsening the situation.
